The Honorable Maria Puente Mitchell
Mayor, City of Miami Springs
Maria Mitchell currently has the honor of serving in her second term as Mayor of the beautiful City of Miami Springs. She was elected Mayor after serving two terms as a City Councilwoman. Miami Springs is a historic and vibrant community of 14,000 residents and over 500 business owners located in the very heart of bustling Miami-Dade County.
One of Mayor Mitchell’s goals is to ensure smaller municipalities play a more significant role in decision making at the County and State level. Another goal is to make Miami Springs and other Florida communities more environmentally and economically sustainable.
Ms. Mitchell is an adjunct professor at Florida International University in the School of Public Policy and Administration and at Barry University in the Department of Biology. Maria Mitchell is the former Manager of Risk Management and Safety for Miami-Dade County and has over 30 years of experience promoting and establishing safety, health, and sustainability programs in the public sector. Ms. Mitchell is past Chairperson of the National Safety Council’s Government and Public Sector Division and a National Safety Council Delegate. She is a Certified Safety Manager, a member of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, a member of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and serves on the American Industrial Hygiene Conference Program Committee. Mayor Mitchell is a member of the Mayors’ Coalition of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities.
Ms. Mitchell has a Master of Science (MS) Degree in Environmental Health and Safety from the University of Miami, College of Engineering. She has a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of Georgia, College of Agriculture.
