Contest Details:
The Florida League of Mayors partners with the Florida League of Cities to offer the If I Were Elected Mayor essay contest for Florida 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
The Florida League of Cities has been the united voice for Florida’s municipalities for more than 100 years. FLC’s mission is to serve the needs of Florida’s municipalities and promote local self-government. The FLC supports local voices making local choices to protect and enhance Florida’s communities.
The Florida League of Mayors is an organization for Mayors, founded and developed by Mayors. The organization provides the Mayors of Florida with the ability to explore, in great depth, areas of mutual concern and opportunity.
The essay contest began in 2014.
A Florida student (in grades 6th, 7th or 8th) can win up to $1,000 for writing an essay! The essay should focus on how serving as Mayor can create a positive impact, and how Home Rule supports making your municipality a better place to live.
What are the prizes?
First place receives a $1,000 gift card, second place receives a $500 gift card and third place receives a $250 gift card.
Winners will receive a gift card and a framed resolution presented at their local city council/commission meeting.
When is the deadline?
The deadline for submitting an essay for 2025-2026 is January 31, 2026.
