My Word: Mayors on jobs' front lines

Recently, I led more than 40 mayors in Tallahassee with the message "We mean business." Joined by dozens of business leaders from our communities, we went to the state Capitol to communicate our concerns about the economic future of Florida.

When it comes to helping the private sector create and grow jobs, nobody does it better than local government. We are the government closest to the people; we know local strengths and our place in the economy. We know our cities' vision and goals, having developed them with our constituents and business leaders. Even the best state or Washington, D.C. lawmakers can't know all the nooks and crannies of each community. They don't have the opportunity, like we do, to work day in and day out with local business leaders.
